Our Vision

Our Vision is to be the premier program in reducing the gap in homelessness among employed families, temporarily unemployed families, and their children in the Tri-Cities, Richmond Metropolitan areas, and Surry County.

Why Are We Here

The root cause of family homelessness can be attributed to a myriad of circumstances. Families may become homeless after suffering a crisis such as loss of a job, domestic violence, an accident, illness, mental illness, or substance abuse. It can also be an economic spiral where they find themselves unable to pay for housing, food, childcare, healthcare, and other essentials due to the crisis. Family members are sometimes born into a cycle of homelessness due to a lack of financial literacy or decisions that may have led to the abuse of social support networks. According to Homeward 2020 Impact Services, the Homeless Crisis Line (HCL) recorded that 623 families including 1,206 children met the criteria of homelessness or are within 3 days of losing housing in the Richmond area and 1,274 client’s prior residence was not meant for human habitation. Of those children, only 792 were connected to community resources. Due to a lack of adequate accommodations in year 2020, 414 children or 199 families may have had to find shelter in hotels, their vehicles, and sometimes the couches or floors of others. Without strong support programs and networks, families may find the road back to stability long and very difficult.

How We Can Help

The Robin’s Nest equips individuals and families who are employed, temporarily unemployed, or have suffered a crisis with the necessary tools needed to break the yoke of homelessness and to attain permanent housing with self-sufficiency. We provide comprehensive programs and services that are critical in mitigating the impact of poverty. With the understanding that the solutions for our guest may be resolved over a longer term, we provide a program that assist with continuum of care. We also recognize that the steps to end homelessness requires the family’s willingness, a supportive team, and resources. Therefore, full support throughout the process in hopes to break barriers that may lead to a lack of stable housing is offered.

Our Goal

Our goal is to provide transitional housing for individuals and high-risk families who have a current or ongoing history of homelessness. We make available the comprehensive services needed to assist men, women and children rooted in the cycle of homelessness to achieve independence and stability. The Robin’s Nest focuses on transitioning clients with less extensive household barriers to self-sufficiency in 12-18 months and providing longer-term transitional housing assistance for those with more extensive barriers.
